Clear before you decorate
Holiday boxes are easier to manage when the garage, closets, and spare rooms have breathing room. Before pulling everything out, remove broken decorations, old boxes, damaged furniture, and items you already know you will not use again. A small cleanout can make the season feel less crowded.
Make guest spaces usable
Guest rooms often become storage rooms during the year. If visitors are coming, remove old mattresses, broken lamps, piles of boxes, and unused furniture early. Waiting until the week of the visit adds stress and limits scheduling options.
Donate while items still have value
Housewares, decor, small furniture, and toys may help someone else if they are clean and usable. Sort donation candidates before the pickup. Items that are damaged, unsafe, or worn out can go into the haul-away pile.
Start the new year lighter
Holiday decluttering is not just about one event. It is a chance to reset your home before the new year. Removing what no longer fits your life makes the next season easier to unpack, decorate, and enjoy.
